Are you struggling with your page views? Traffic? No one visits your website? Not showing on Google search? It is indeed difficult and expensive to get your website traffic with SEO.
What is the easiest (and absolutely free) way? Pinterest!
You may know Pinterest as a social media, but it’s much more than that.
In fact, almost all of the traffic to this blog is from Pinterest! (Did you find me through Pinterest?)
It takes time to master Pinterest, but once you get the hang of it, you might feel you’re cheating the Internet. In this post, I’ll guide you step-by-step.
Set Up Your Pinterest Profile
I assume you already have your website. Now, let’s start by learning how to set up Pinterest profile.
- Go to pinterest.com and choose the ‘Business’ tab. Fill in all the information. Then finish the usual registration process (email verification).
Or, if you already have your Pinterest profile, you can use it! Just switch it to a business account in the Settings.
You’ll want this Business Profile because it has Pinterest Analytics in it. You can see your daily views, how your pins are performing, how your website traffic (that originates from Pinterest) is performing.
- Once you’re in, you will be asked about your interests. What kind of pins do you want to see in your feeds? These categories/niches will likely be your website niche as well, so you can repin easily from your home feeds.
- Now, complete your profile. Your profile is what people will see first when they click on your username, so make sure it’s looking great. This is what my profile looks like.
You can customize yours by going to Settings > Profile.
- Upload your logo or headshot for personal brands as your profile picture.
- Your business name should be descriptive, so people could know right away what your business is about.
- The next important part is your ‘About You’. Fill it with what you do, and how it can benefit your audience. Mention your interests can also help, as it attracts like-minded people.
- Add your website URL and claim it. You can see how it is done here.
Now that your profile is ready, we’ll continue with creating your boards and pins!
Creating Your First Board
You can start pinning only if you have a board.
Start by asking yourself, what’s my target audience and what are their interests? Write them down in a list.
For me, because I have experience as a freelancer and a blogger, I want to help fellow freelancers and bloggers. The relevant topics are making money online, digital marketing, social media management, blogging, freelancing. I also add some of my ‘personal interests’ like personal development, yoga, and traveling. So far it’s working great!
These topics can be as broad or specific as you like. For example, you can have a general ‘Digital Marketing’ board, divided into sections such as ‘Social Media Marketing’, ‘Content Marketing’, and ‘SEO’. Or you can create those 3 topics as 3 individual boards. It’s all up to you, but remember that you have to make sure there are enough pins to pin on one board (you don’t want to be too specific).
How do you create a board?
- You can create your first board by going to your profile, then click the ‘Boards’ tab. There, you will see ‘Create Board’ option.
- Fill in the board name, make sure it’s easy to understand. You also have the option to set it to ‘Secret’. A secret board won’t be visible to your followers.
- Complete your board description with keywords. You can do a mini keyword research on Pinterest search bar (it will show most-searched phrases). Write 2-3 sentences for your board description.
- Then, choose the category. What is the board about?
- You’re all set! Click ‘Save’ and you can start pinning.
I suggest you create several boards first before pinning. Create boards for all of the topics you’ve decided earlier.
Creating Your First Pin
It’s time to fill up our boards! There are several ways to find pins you want to pin.
- From your home feeds. Just click a pin that suits one of your board, then click ‘Save’. Then you can choose which board you want to pin to. Pinterest is getting smarter these days, when I write this, it suggests one board that’s perfect for the pin.
- From the search bar. Type in some relevant keywords in the search bar. You can pin those pins that appear in the search results.
- Click the ‘+’ button on the right top menu bar, then click ‘Create Pin’. Upload an image (can be a product, banner, or a photo), input your website URL, and add the description.
Tips: vertical pins perform way much better than the horizontal ones!
There you go! That’s how you set up a Pinterest business account.
But wait, I have some tips for you to grow your account:
- Pin CONSISTENTLY. I pin 20-30 pins a day manually, usually 5 every 2 hours. There is a really good tool that you can use, Tailwind (my client uses it and it’s working great!) You can pin on your own like me, but please, please, be consistent. It is the key.
- Join group boards! This is really important for reaching a new audience. I will write a whole post on this, comment below if you’re interested!
- Pinterest once mentioned that the first 5 pins after 00.00 UTC are prioritized for distribution, but it doesn’t mean that you have to pin excessively at that hours. It will only overwhelm your followers, which lead them to unfollow you. I have tried cramming my pins, it’s not working. I didn’t get the usual number of repins and followers that day.
- Create interesting pins. It must be eye-catching because, in the sea of pins, your pin will only be opened and pinned if it captures your audience attention instantly. Pay attention to pins you usually repin, take notes of what works and what doesn’t. Remember, for a post or a product or a page, you are free to create several pins. It’s fun to experiment!
