How to Get These Valuable Skills While Being Paid

Years ago, I’ve never heard the term ‘virtual assistant’. I only know ‘freelancer’, which is someone who works for her or himself, not working in an office.

Now right after I graduated, I am a freelancer working as a virtual assistant.

For the last 5 months, I’ve been working at home, getting income bigger than a fresh graduate in my country (Indonesia).

The Beginning

I meet all my clients through Upwork. At first, I put ‘English-Indonesian translator’ in the description. But the job openings for translation are not that many, I only landed one job in that field eventually.

For your information, I just graduated from a local private university with Bachelor of Information Systems degree. I don’t like coding. In other words, I don’t have any specific technical skills.

When I was browsing Upwork, I noticed a role with the most demand, virtual/personal assistant. A virtual/personal assistant takes care of things, depending on the employer. This role covers various businesses and skills. It could be:

  • managing an online shop on Shopify or Amazon
  • researching keywords for SEO purpose
  • publishing blog posts through WordPress
  • managing projects using project management tools like Asana, Trello, etc.
  • managing all kinds of social media
  • making and taking calls

I’m hooked. This is the perfect job for me. It’s a mix of IT, management, and English!

So I changed my description into ‘Tech-Savvy Virtual Assistant’.

Skills I Learned Working as a Virtual Assistant

Since then, I have learned countless new things about digital marketing and business in general. Some of them are:

  • Pinterest marketing, how to generate traffic through Pinterest, etc. (I will write about this in the future! Stay tuned!)
  • customer service, email ethics
  • social media management: best practices, tools (Hootsuite, Buffer, Tailwind)
  • onsite and offsite SEO (Yoast, link building, keyword research)
  • remote working (how to communicate and get things done through Slack, Skype)

Virtual assistant working with a laptop. This is the PERFECT job for anyone (especially Computer Science/Information Systems students) who wants to try working remotely. You get to experience different work with different clients, every time!

And the most important thing is, you get to acquire these valuable skills while being paid! Just think of it as a paid internship.

Then when you’ve become experienced enough, you can be a consultant (and charge more), or establish yourself as a brand (like me!). You will have everything you need to do that.

Try it yourself, register on Upwork or Freelancer, then come back here with YOUR success story!
